UMS Awarded Top 5 Active Huawei ICT Academies Award –


University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) received the Top 5 Active Huawei ICT Academies Award, recently.

The award received for the fourth year in a row during Huawei Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Competition Malaysia Final 2022-2023.

This award’s evaluation metrics include management efficiency, number of active students, number of trained students and number of certified students.

It is also including number of short courses or long courses and number of students participating in the Huawei ICT Competition and their achievements. 

The Award presented by Managing Director of Huawei Enterprise Malaysia David-Li to UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Ir Dr. Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly.

According to UMS statement, the award recognizing UMS outstanding performance in ICT talent development and Huawei ICT Academy management.  

“The establishment of the HAINA centre, also known as “Huawei ICT Academy” at the Faculty of Computing and Informatics not only serves as a strategic collaboration between UMS and Huawei;  it is also aligned with the Strategic Transformation of UMS towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). 

“The HAINA programme allows the UMS Huawei ICT Academy to deliver a total of twenty-two (22) Huawei Professional certification training to the enrolled students, conditionally such that the lecturers had certified as Huawei Certified Academy Instructors (HCAI) and meet the minimum requirements of Huawei ICT Academy.

“These courses include the core technologies of supporting Industry 4.0. such as Routing and Switching, WLAN, Security, Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing and Artificial Intelligence,” said the statement here today.

The explosion of digital information, spurred by the advancement of ICT technologies, has pushed forward the need for enhanced productivity, innovation, competitiveness, and efficiency in Malaysian Industry. 

“Through the establishment of Huawei ICT Academy at East Malaysia, UMS is part of Huawei’s global education programme, which allows students to explore the latest ICT technologies with industry experts and understand the latest industry trends.

“Today, more than 650 UMS ICT graduates took part the Huawei training courses. More than 350 UMS students successfully certified as HCIA (Huawei Certified ICT Associate) in diverse ICT fields, including routing and switching, security, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, security and 5G. 

“Certified UMS graduates have been offered to work with Huawei and their partners as Network Engineer, IT Engineer, DOC Engineer, Software Engineer, Network Product Engineer either in Malaysia, Asia Pacific or Middle East Region. 

“Also, UMS Huawei ICT Academy became the first university in Malaysia to be certified with HCIP (Huawei Certified ICT Professional) in 2019,” the statement added. 

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in universities being closed around the world. However, it is indeed a testament to the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, UMS efforts to continue and even expand the collaboration with Huawei to offer our students yet another HMS Mobile App Development training and certification program and 32 students have been certified as Foundation HMS Developers.

For the record, The Huawei ICT Competition’s impact has increased steadily since its debut in 2015. The 7th Huawei ICT Competition has drawn 150,000 participants from over 2,000 universities and colleges across 85 nations and territories. 

The 8th Huawei ICT competition 2022-2023,  Malaysia Region, launched in August this year, aimed to nurture local ICT talents and develop the next generation of ICT leaders in Malaysia.

It also aims to promote national ICT competitiveness, innovation and creativity, a staple to building a knowledge-based economy.
