A woman wears many hats ­– career woman, mother, wife, daughter, sister and caregiver.

In the hustle and bustle of juggling between their work and family, many women tend to neglect their health.

Some women forget that without good health, they cannot enjoy life to the fullest.

Star2 speaks to three women CEOs of Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care medical centres in the Klang Valley. They talk about empowerment and women prioritising their health.

“Women empowerment means enabling women to be on the same footing as their male counterparts and giving then a hand up when needed,” says Trish Hogan.

What’s women empowerment?

It means enabling women to be on the same footing as their male counterparts and giving then a hand up when needed. Empowerment means facilitating women to achieve what’s possible for them individually or collectively. It also means allowing women to reach their full potential and to get just, fair and equal compensation for their talents.

What does it take for women to climb up the corporate ladder?

Show up ready to work diligently and purposefully. Learn the good and bad from your bosses and peers, and only emulate the good. Ensure you have the relevant educational qualifications to back you up. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind when required. Have strength in your convictions and always maintain your integrity.

Why should women make their health a priority?

If you are not healthy, you can’t look after anyone else. Women are often relied upon to be the caregivers and they need to maintain their strength. We also need to be role models for our children. If they see that we give our health priority, they too will learn to focus on their own health.

What do you think are some of women’s biggest health concerns?

Women stress that they will not be around to care for their children if they get unwell. They worry about the possibility of getting cancer. They can also suffer mental illnesses from domestic violence and not have the power or means to break out of certain situations. Financial insecurity is also a health worry for women.

Share some tips on how women can better manage their health.

I make sure that I get plenty of sleep. I have a motto: “Never say no to exercise”. I take time to take care of my appearance so that I feel good about myself. Where possible, I eat clean and healthy. Take the stairs at work instead of the lift. Book your annual health screening check. Early detection is far better than late detection. Don’t buy new clothing a size bigger if you have put on unnecessary weight. Use your clothes as a marker or reminder that you need to eat less and slim down.

How do you achieve work-life balance?

My children are all adults now but when they were young I made sure that I hired good help to do the things for the family that I was not able to do. I had to realise that I couldn’t do everything myself. I was lucky that my husband believed that he too had full responsibility for caregiving and raising the children and was a very strong support for all things in family life. I also learnt to not take issues from work home, but to reserve home time for family.

Women empowerment means giving power to women to be independent. With independence, women can develop their potential to the fullest.
What does it take for women to climb up the corporate ladder?I’m a trained nurse. I started off from the grassroots and worked my way to the top. If you want to be something, you have to work towards it. Get your certification and make your dreams come true.

Why should women make their health a priority?

Despite women’s busy schedule, they should make it a point to attend health screenings (mammogram, bone density and pap smear) and medical talks. Go for regular screenings to avoid any health issues. If you don’t have time to hit the gym or go hiking, brisk walk instead. For women in desk-bound jobs, make it a point to do light exercises like stretching or walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift. Any form of exercise is beneficial.

What do you think are some of women’s biggest health concerns?

Women worry about breast cancer or cervical cancer, hypertension and diabetes too.

Share some tips on how women can better manage their health.

Control your eating. Consume three meals a day and eat in moderation. Time management is equally important. Don’t make it a habit to take work home. Ensure you have enough time with your family, especially your children. How do you achieve work-life balance? It is important to spend quality time with your family. Try to finish your work before going home to be with your children.

Women empowerment means taking charge of your health, career and destiny. Women have the confidence and potential to succeed in any field.

What does it take for women to climb up the corporate ladder?

To succeed in any profession, it is important to work hard and love your job. I’m a trained accountant and have put in extra effort to chalk different milestones in my career. In this job, you need to have the compassion to deal with people from all walks of life.

Why should women make their health a priority?

If women don’t take care of themselves, who will? Prevention is better than cure and it is advisable to undergo a medical check-up annually.

What do you think are some of women’s biggest health concerns?

Their concerns include breast and cervical cancers, heart and lung diseases. Stress is also a problem. For those suffering from anxiety or depression, seek professional help or talk it out with friends.

Share some tips on how women can better manage their health.

Women should eat healthily and exercise regularly. Women in their 20s are advised to do regular self breast examinations and annual pap-smear checks. From their 30s onwards, they should go for annual medical check-ups.

How do you achieve work-life balance?

I am blessed to have great support from my husband and family. I make it a point to leave office by 7pm and make it home for dinner with my family around 8pm. I like to watch my favourite TV series after dinner. Around 10pm till midnight, I continue to work from home.
